1. Country Overview
Active volcano in Italy erupting in 1989
Italy faces numerous issues and problems that affects the country negatively, even today.
Environmental hazards such as earthquakes, landslides, avalanches, mudslides, and numerous active volcanoes in the area, put millions of people at risk. Air pollution and river pollution are caused by industrial, as well as agricultural factors. Lakes are damaged from acid rain, and there are insufficient industrial disposal and waste treatment facilities. Endangered species in Italy include ten mammals, seven birds, and over two hundred plant species.
Other problems that impact Italy today include; illegal immigration, organized crime, corruption, high unemployment, slow economic growth, and the differences between north and south Italy. According to CIA Factbook, North Italy is a growing, more developed industrial area overrun by private companies, while southern Italy is less developed, has high unemployment rates, and relies on welfare and agriculture. Italy's economy has its ups and downs, with an exceptionally high public debt. In 2010, Italy's free-market economy was ranked as eighth largest in the world based on nominal GDP. Although Italy has few natural resources, it is the largest producer of renewable energy.
With a literacy rate of 98.9 %, education does not seem to be a problem in Italy. There are five phases of education: kindergarten, primary school, lower secondary school, upper secondary school, and university. Italy has around 63 universities, ranging from state and private to technical and specialized institutes.
